Good news for UK solar – it has set a brand-new precedent by meeting the deployment target set by the Government for the first time ever since the degression scheme was introduced in 2012.
In fact, solar did more than simply meet the 100-megawatt target, it smashed it – with a massive 124MW of solar PV deployed in the last quarter of 2014.
Brilliant for solar PV – not so brilliant for those currently contemplating going solar. This surge in deployment has triggered the UK’s first ever ‘degression through growth’; as opposed to the usual automatic tariff cut, which occurs every nine months.
It’s no joke that, as of April 1st, the amount paid for energy generated from household solar panels is set to fall by 3.5%. Any new domestic solar PV installation will be eligible for a reduced feed-in tariff (FIT) rate of 13.39p per kWh for a system up to 10kW; as opposed to the current rate of 13.88p.
So understandably, those considering solar PV are now eager to secure the present FIT rate by having their systems installed before March 31st.
Each time there’s a degression in the FIT there tends to be a rush to install before the deadline – which makes a great selling point for installers.
However, while it’s obviously nicer to get the higher rate, the FIT reduction will not render solar PV less beneficial to householders.
In cash terms, a 3.5 per cent cut equates to roughly £20 per year less for a 4kWp domestic system – that’s around £1.67 per month.
So, although households will see a negligible reduction in their return through the FIT after March 31st, solar PV will still make exceptionally good financial sense.
Also, experts claim the continued fall in the cost of panels means the average size of installations are growing – and so are the returns.
